Close-up Magic: What is the intrigue?

In this article I will attempt to convey why this form of magical entertainment is in such demand.

What is Close -up Magic

To be considered for this category, the magic must take place in such a way as to create a sense of intimacy between you and your audience. It is normally performed right in front of the spectators and conveys the feeling that they are directly involved in the magic happening.

In this genre of magic, it is imperative to understand and be comfortable with your audience feeling it is acceptable to touch your props in order to include themselves in the performance. As a close-up magician, you should encourage this attitude, as the more the audience is involved, the more entertainment value they will receive.

What is required?

In most situations where close-up magic is performed, the magician can "pack small and play big". This means only having to carry small and relatively normal props such as playing cards, coins, sponge balls and rope. It is also important to know how to use your surroundings to create magic, such as utilizing napkins, glasses, silverware, and wine bottles to name a few.

Close-up magic creates the same effects as you would expect in a regular show, where things change, appear, disappear, levitate, break and restore, and penetrate other objects. The aspect of this type of magic which makes it so appealing is that it happens right in front of the spectator, and depending on the effect, even right in their hands. When this is coupled with the presentation style of the magician, it creates an entertaining and amazing experience for your audience.

It is imperative that the performance fit the personality of the performer. You must have a unique style with the emphasis on interacting and entertaining. Your show could be structured around a funny, mysterious, suspense, thought provoking or psychic abilities, but in the final analysis, it must be interactive and enjoyable while providing an uplifting experience.

The reason that close-up magic is in such demand these days, is due in part, to the personality these performers exude, but also because they don't need access to power, a sound system or a stage area in which to perform. Close-up magicians are at ease mingling with the crowd and breaking the ice. Not only can they entertain, but also create an atmosphere of relaxation and camaraderie. When all of these aspects are combined, then it becomes very clear that they are the obvious choice when looking to book entertainment for a wedding, catered events , corporate dinner or just as a value added promotion in restaurants.

Even among magicians, the top professionals in close-up magic are considered to be the elite. Many magicians will strive to join this elite group, and many will actually perform this genre of magic, but few will reach the heights. Not only must your skills be honed to an extreme level, but you must also have the natural outgoing personality. With these two things, you are going to spend an inordinate amount of time rehearsing and routining your show. When you do reach this pinnacle, you will have accomplished a great feat in the magic world. Now you have some understanding of why there is so much intrigue surrounding close-up magic.

I wish you all the best in your magical journeys.
