Magic Castle

Postby Overlord » July 24th, 2010, 12:50 am

I'm thinking about auditioning for The Magic Castle in Hollywood, but before I do I want to know whether or not it is better to do traditional tricks or modern tricks? Although there are other venues for magicians I think this is the biggest one.

Do tricks that fit your character. That's all you can really say. If you have a defined stage character, you can take the oldest trick in the world and make it incredibly entertaining, even if they've seen it all before; take Gazzo, for instance. He literally does what's considered the oldest trick in the world (Cups and Balls), yet he's still one of the best and it's his most popular routine.

Andrini made a good point. The difference between old and new is minimal. You want to do effects you can perform in your sleep and ones that you can bring with an entertaining presentation -- if you can an unexpected twist for those that think they know the effect. You're going to be judged on your presentation and your sleight of hand skill (or lack thereof). Do whatever makes those shine brightest.

When your auditioning you'll be performing to magicians so I think it'd be a great idea to work on the base. They obviously know all the sleights you'll use, and what not so take advantage of this and give it a twist. Something that will actually fool magicians and spectators alike.
