Quarter Through Tupperware

The magician shows an empty tupperware, a quarter, and a playing card. He then seals the lid on the tupperware and places the quarter on top of it. The magician places a playing card on top of the quarter, and slams the top of the tupperware as hard as he/she can. As a result, the quarter immediately penetrates the tupperware. The magician then opens the lid to pull out the quarter from the tupperware.

Preparation

You will need a tupperware with a lid (picture 1), double- sided sticky tape, a playing card, and 2 identical quarters. Set up the trick by putting sticky tape under the lid with a quarter stuck to it (picture 2). Then put sticky tape on the face of the playing card, and make sure it can't be seen easily (picture 3, I colored the tape black so it could be seen more easily).

Method

Start off the trick by taking the lid off the tupperware to show that the tupperware is empty. It is important to not acknowledge the lid because they may want to examine it. (In order to prevent the spectator from examining the lid, have them focus on the tupperware instead). Once you have showed the empty tupperware, seal the lid on it. Then, you can even shake the tupperware to add to the effect, just proving that the tupperware is empty (You may need to experiment with this for a little).

Now, place the quarter on top of the lid. Take the playing card and put that on top of the quarter, making sure the tape is exactly lined up with the quarter. Slam the top of the tupperware with your fist, and the quarter will fall through. What is really happening is that the quarter taped to the bottom of the lid is released, while the quarter that you placed on top of the lid is sticking to the card. Take off the card from on top of the lid and place it on the table. It is very important that as you are doing this you are shaking the tupperware so the sound of the coin in the tupperware overpowers the coin stuck to the card hitting the table.

Open up the lid, pull out the quarter, and let the spectator examine it. While he/she is doing this, remove the quarter from the card and palm it for the remainder of the trick.

Hawk 4th Apr 07	Not great, as you ccan not show the lid ! if the lid is part of the trick, ie you are using it, it needs to be shown clean, or the spectators will just think, yes , it is something to do with the lid - as he let us see the container, but not the infamous lid, sorry, and this is not including the tape stuck to the unexaminable card.

Willio 6th Apr 07	Good trick, but why not just palm the quarter with tape or wax already stuck to it and place it on the lid after it has been examined. This would let you end much cleaner.

epentatonic 7th Apr 07	I think in order to elimate the spectator wanting to examine the card, i would remove the card all together, and either put the tape on my palm or just improvise by licking it. Slam the top of the upperware with the palm and coming up with the quarter palmed, drop it into a pocket or something. And to take care of the lid problem, do what willio said by placing quarter under lid after they examined it already. Otherwize, bravo.

mrdrakeboy 8th Apr 07	Personally, I would forego the tape on the side of the card, then just apply slight pressure to the side of the quarter under the card so it comes up a bit, grab it like in a four-quarter matrix effect, and slide it off into palm as you put the card face-up on the table.

sasukeuchihashar 28th Apr 07	a easier way would be simply to palm the coin in the middle of your hand rather then using the double sided tape. though this is harder it would remove any complications you get with the audience wanting to examin the card and findind the tape.

leonleon 27th May 07	If you wan to show the lid in the begining, the you can palm the coin with the tape on it , and then secretly put it on the lid when your putting the lid on the tupperwear.
coreyhammer 3rd Nov 08	I can think of a couple mods to this. First...magicians wax on your hand and in the lid. It's more invisible than tape and eliminates the need for a card. The coin on the lid then sticks to the wax on your hand while the percussive force of slamming the hand releases the other coin. Misdirection can then be used to pocket the coin in the palm.
Aframestor 17th Mar 09	You don't have to put the tape on the card, you can pick up the coin and the card together, as done in coin matrix. In this case it will be easier to ditch the coin.
