Retention Vanish

A coin is placed on the left hand and is closed, when opening the hand, the coin has vanished.

Preparation

Its better if you use a big coin, this makes it easy and more convincing, a half dollar works well.

Pictures

1. Hold the coin like this

Method

Grab the coin near to the edge with your right index and thumb and just put the other finger on one side without grabbing the coin as in picture 1. Start pretending to place the coin on your left hand as shown on picture 2. Instead of placing the coin, start spinning the coin on the axis of your index and thumb so it spins into your right hand covered by your right second middle and little finger as shown on pictures 3 and 4.

As you do this, timing is very important because this happens at the same time that you close your left hand to cover the move. Then, when the coin is totally hidden by your right fingers, take out the right hand and complete closing the left hand. It is important to take the right hand out the same way as when grabbing the coin, so it is clear that the hand is clean. If done with practice and smoothly, this sleight is very convincing.

I see how this can easily work. Good trick. Although when you show that hand empty, you will have to have a way of getting rid of the palmed coin because once they see that your hand is empty, they will be ALL over that other hand.

It is an ok effect but I beleive it could be better because you dont end clean. To end clean you could wave the hand they think the coin is in to misdirect them while you drop the coin in your pocket. And add in some interesting reveal. I may use this one.

french drop isn't really better. this vanish is a much better way of fake transfering a coin.

after you close your palm you could swing your hand away from your body and then say "watch, its gonna go from my hand to my pocket" and when you say that, you put the coin in your pocket and then do like a little shake with your hand or something like that, or show that the coin is traveling through you arm, then show your hand empty and show that it is in your pocket.

This trick is nice, but french drops, to many people know, and if you dont practice the french drop, it becomes obvious, this one is really easy to learn, and a little bit more convincing.

actually this is just a sleght of hand that you use in a trick, its liket he french drop, you also stay with the coin in one hand, but with a good routine, you can do many many things, and it is always good to have different false transfers, there are many many and this is a basic variation from the retention vanish. its not intended to be alone, combine it as sayed with misdirection and other things happening.

This is the best vanish I have ever seen.. I normally prefer a variation 4 this slieght.. After you have retained the coin in the wrong hand its better if you classic palm that coin using some misdirections like pointing using that hand.. U can use it in a variety of tricks like coin across.

Great one! ^^ Simple, but youd be surprised how amazed people are by the simplest of illusions, whilst we keep focusing on the complexities lol In any case, to end clean, simple drop the hand with the palmed coin to your side, lean forward with your fisted empty hand, this will call attention to the empty hand, and deposit coin in pocket. Its amazingly convincing, i promise! Again, awesome trick!

This is one of those easy to learn, hard to master trick. One of the basic coin vanishes, but nonetheless one of the most effective, great submission!

Here is Good way to end this trick: 1. Bring the fist that they think the coin is in, shake your hand, and open it up, to show it is gone. 2. Bring the hand that actually has coin in it, palming the coin out of view. 3. Make an opened fist with the opening facing up. Reach the tip of some of your fingers into the fist, and let the coin drop into the coin hand's fingers. 4. Pull out the appeared coin from your fist.

It's a good sleight, but I'm not sure it can stand alone as a trick. It seems much easier and more convincing than the french drop.

I prefer this to the french drop. Performed correctly, when your audience describes the trick to someone else, they will generally "remember" actually seeing the coin in your palm after you pulled your hand away.

I think the french drope is much better

The french drop is not actually used in this sleight, so I don't know why is it mentioned in the details. As with most of the vanishers the other hand is the issue, but as lond as yoi keep them occupied with the hand that doesnt have the coin any more, and wait until you expose it, you can pretty much place the coin with the other hand where ever you want...just don't do it twice in front of the same audience..do a diferent vanish where you can instantly show both hands empty and prove their previous guesses wrong

A possible way to clean up would be to reach in your pocket with the hand that his holding the coin to take a pencil out or an "invisible" magic wand and while doing that, drop the coin in your pocket. Then use what you pulled out as a magic wand to make the coin disappear.

Not as good as the French Drop, in my mind. The reason is simply because this is less exposed-looking(to the spectator) than the French Drop.

This is on the "Silver Dream" DVD. After you have concealed the coin in your hand, bring your hand up to your shoulder (this only works with shirts with pockets) and wave down. As you wave down drop the coin in your front pocket and wave the now empty hand over your other hand. Show both hands empty.

Extremely useful sleight. Not a stand alone trick. I learned it on David Roth's Ultimate Coin Magic DVD. He uses it frequently and it is always effective. I have tried it out on a few friends and it is very deceptive. If used in a routine, the fact that your other hand is not "clean" becomes a moot point.

Alot of you are saying that you don't end clean, well... with the coin in your right hand, (supposedly) bring your left hand up to your mouth. Push the coin with your thumb to your fingertips. Reach in your mouth and pull the coin out, show your hand clean. Works best with a signed coin.

You could also bring the coin to fingertip rest, point to the empty hand where specs thought the coin was, and then switch over your hands, and let the coin drop from fingertip rest into the other hand which now points at the hand that kept the coin. I'll work up a quick guide on that. It's a sleight I've been working on.

I prefer the french drop, as there is no way you can easily dispose of the vanished coin, and it is fairly obvious where the coin has gone. I still use the RV, but not when I can help it.

Why are we spending so much time talking about ending clean, this is clearly just highlighting the actual, placement part of the vanish. I only know about 6 ways to do this kind of vanish, and I like to have more. Even though you still have the coin in the other hand at the end.
